The Jasper Blom Quartet features four internationally acclaimed Dutch jazz musicians, that have been together for more than 12 years. Blom’s intelligent compositions cover a wide range of stylistic influences. Supported by the stellar playing of guitarist Jesse van Ruller and one of the most amazing European jazz drummers, Martijn Vink, the Jasper Blom Quartet is a true showcase of what melody, rhythm and harmony have to offer in composition and improvisation. The JBQ performs regularly throughout Europe on major international festivals and in clubs.
Under the name “POLYPHONY” the JBQ has started working with internationally acclaimed soloists. POLYPHONY is a result of Blom’s fascination with 15th century polyphonic music, a style of music that simultaneously combines a number of parts, each forming an individual melody and harmonizing with each other. The Flemish Polyphonists of the 14th – 16th century contributed greatly to European music bydeveloping Polyphony. According to Blom, this early Western music has a remarkable melodic quality that makes it very accessible and yet it sounds as adventurous as any good contemporary music. Inspired by French and Flemish masters like de Machaut, Dufay and Ockeghem, Blom invited guest Belgium’s #1 trumpet player Bert Joris and created a new experience by composing his own version of medieval polyphonic music for jazz quintet.
Bert Joris is one of the greatest and most lyrical jazz trumpet players of Europe. As prodigious composer, arranger and bandleader, he is a one of a kind musician with a beautiful sound and a soulful approach towards improvisation. His work with the Brussels Jazz orchestra has been deemed melodically rich, harmonically sophisticated, invariably bright and swinging”. Bert Joris won the prestigious Belgium Django d’Or prize and was awarded the Flemish Cultural Award in 2009.
The music has been released on a fantastic live double CD entitled “POLYPHONY” on the prestigious London label Whirlwind Recordings featuring both Bert Joris and Nils Wogram.
